The term Aromatherapy was coined to describe the use of essential oils for the promotion of health and well-being. The therapy, which utilises plant, extracts with aromas. Essential oils have been used in healing for thousands of years, even before the Egyptian times. Their use dwindled in the 1800's when the civilised world learned to synthesise medicines, which we then thought could replace the natural and more expensive genuine product. Subsequently, we have learnt homeopathy (Aromatherapy) and allopathic can complement each other without prejudice.

Essential oils and what they do

Essential oils are extracts from different parts of a plant, be it from the leaves, flowers, stem, bark, roots, or the fruit of the plant. In certain plants, different oils are extracted from different parts of the same plant with significantly different properties. Each oil having unique properties, which can be utilised by the body to aid health and prevent disease. Most essential oils are antiseptic, and help the body overcome fungal infections as Candida or athlete's foot; others help combat viral infections such as warts or colds. Of particular note are the properties worthy of note; essential oils assist the body returns to a more normal state. However, do not cause an opposite condition if used as prescribed.

Using Essential Oils

Essential oils are extremely versatile and can be used in many ways. As each oil has different properties, it is necessary first to decide what condition you wish to treat. Once selected, the oils may be used in a massage application, inhalation, and vaporisation or in a bath. Essential oils are powerful and only small amounts are required during treatment for effective and maximum benefit.

Carriers

Anything that ‘carries’ the essential oils into the body is known, as a carrier is it the air in vaporisation or a base oil, lotion or cream used in massage application. Amongst the many products, used vegetable oils and white lotions are the primary carriers. Unlike essential oils, which tend to be distilled when extracted, base oils tend to be cold pressed. This oil is unrefined retaining its natural properties, and although not as powerful as an essential oil, many base oils have unique remedial qualities of their own which supplement the treatment.

The Power of Smell

Aromatherapy and especially inhalation exploits the power of smell to the human body. Often time's smells evoke memory responses by association, For instance the smells of newly cut grass, after-shave; the clinical smells of hospitals trigger our memory in some way reminding each of us of particular incidents or events. The effects that smells have on us should never be underestimated.

The Power of Touch

Traditionally in this country, Aromatherapy has been hand in hand with massage, which utilises another important sensory preceptor, that of touch. A professional need not administer massage; a friend or partner rubbing your shoulders is giving a massage. Touch in itself brings us closer to others and immediately helps us de-stress. Aromatherapy and touch complement each other, leading to the Aromatherapy massage, the best method of using essential oils in this country.
